Stannard Rock Fishing Charters

Shelter Bay Charter's Stannard Rock fishing charter is the most requested of all charters. Stannard Rock is a reef marked by a lighthouse and located at the furthest fishing area from the shores of Lake Superior. Stannard Rock reef was discovered back in the 1800's by a fur trader traveling on a ship. The reef is a natural feeding ground for Lake Superior Lake Trout, and for that reason, it is one of the more favored a great fishing spots.

When the bite is on... time stands still...

Rising from the waters into the horizon, from a distance we see a mirage that comes into our focus as we approach... a lighthouse atop a rock, ageless, timeless, its solitutde mysterious... it beckons all who seek the thrill of the frenzied feeders, the lakers of this sunken island who come from the depths of Superior to feed nearer the surface, the shallower waters of The Rock... and we set the hook... they hit... one after another after another after another... THE BITE IS ON!

When the bite is on... time stands still... and time stands no stiller than it does at Stannard Rock (sometimes called Standard Rock and known to the fishermen who've been there as 'The Rock'), it is one of Lake Superior's most remote fishing spots of all. Here is where the great and grand Lake Trout gather from the deepest depths of Superior to feed. Lakers in excess of 60 pounds have laid their claim to fame in the records and brought a thrill unsurpassed elsewhere to their hunters.

On the appropriately patriotic day of July 4, 1882, John Pasque, the first keeper assigned to the light trimmed, adjusted, and exhibited the light for the first time.

Today, Stannard's rock continues to stand vigil over the shoals it was built to protect, but does so without human assistance, since the station's light is completely automated with a solar-powered 300mm plastic lens.
